1. Tell us about your beautiful self. Who is Shanelle?
Shanelle is the creative mind behind ‘thefairestofthemhall’ a blog curated by fashion, lifestyle and travel. I’m currently 21, come from the Hunter Valley, NSW and have recently delved into my longed passion for fashion.
I guess you could say fashion has always been with me thanks to my mothers talent of design, who created many pieces for me when I was younger. Unlike my mother however, I unfortunately never got the design trait and that’s why I chose to study fashion business to find out what really makes me admire this particular industry.
After the numerous amount of classes I studied during my time at college I found my calling in fashion journalism, styling and social media. Which brings us to today – I’m an aspiring blogger who hopes to travel to as many places as a lifetime allows, have the opportunity to witness the fashion and cultures around the world and have a walk-in wardrobe that has a never ending supply of the latest trends in fashion.
2. If we asked you to describe your style in 3 words, what would those 3 words be?
Chic, elegant, timeless/classic
3. What inspired you to start blogging?
I’ve always admired the idea of writing ever since high school but didn’t seriously delve into the subject until my higher school certificate years where I took a liking to English advanced and English extension.
From a young age I was always fascinated with music and writing my own tunes (yeah, I was a punk rocker with flowers in my hair) so I guess that contributed to my imaginative eye that I have gained today.
A course requirement at my college Orana, was to design your own blog which I immediately took a liking to. And so here we are today…
As you’ve probably already noted I love to blab and it seemed fitting to express myself through written form. Sorry but not really!
4. If any of our babes out there were thinking about starting a blog, what advice would you give them?
Go for it! Everyone’s writing style/technique is different but that’s what makes you unique and therefore stand out from the crowd of followers. If you’re you than your audience will come to you and therefore the right attention your blog needs.
Prepare a name! This was the hardest part of the creative process. It took me roughly 6 months to settle on something and when I did, it was somehow already taken (so have a few options prepared). After watching me stress to the point of me ripping out the hairs on my head, my darling partner thought of the most amazing blog name and I still thank him so much for it to this day. Now I’m known to you all as ‘thefairestofthemhall’ combining a classic phrase and my last name ‘Fairhall’.
I personally use WordPress as I find its much more simpler than most platforms. There’s plenty of templates to choose from and because of the simplistic structure, you can get a real feel for what the blogging world is really like. I’m still not 100% happy with the look and feel of mine but in time I know I’ll change things up to make it more appealing, that’s the perks of a creative process, it takes time.
Find what inspires you and go from there – let your fingers do the talking.
5. We know you love a good flatlay. Have any tips to creating the perfect one?
Yes! I love flatlays. I aspire to be as good as the flatlay queen herself, Margaret Zhang.
My advice would be to try not to have too many angles or clutter in the shot. I believe a good flatlay is formed on the basis of colour coordination as that alone makes it more visually appealing.
A flatlay is usually a birds eye view so make sure you’re literally on top of your flatlay (using a chair helps) to get that perfect shot. In saying that though I like to think there’s not too many rules when it comes to flatlaying, like in some cases I like to take my flatlays on an angle rather than completely elevated – you’re the creator so you do the creating!
A plain and simple background never goes astray and having a good camera makes everything 1000 times clearer. I personally use the Olympus em-5 mark II (it’s pretty fab).
6. Your outfits are always styled so ridiculously perfectly! Do you have any styling advice for our babes out there?
Firstly, thank you that’s so nice of you to say! My advice would be to stay true to yourself. That’s a lot coming from me as my style is constantly changing depending on my mood or feel but it will do you no good trying to be someone you know you’re damn well not.
Trying to depict yourself as @alexachung or @parisinfourmonths isn’t necessarily a bad thing but be original too. Alexa Chung has a very modern and trend-driven approach to her style whereas Carin Olsson from @parisinfourmonths has a very feminine and classic style.
Just love what you do, who you are, and own what you wear and you can pull off any style you wish. Have fun styling babes!
7. Give us an idea about a typical day in the life of Shanelle.
Like Chelsea L, I too am very boring in my day-to-day life. I usually have a bit of a social life on weekends with my girls or having a series catch up with my boo but other than that I work a majority of the time.
Other than sipping a chai latte (literally my priority of the day), sleeping, eating, working and then chuck in some exercise here and there (repeating), I spend most of my time on social media. Not a day goes by where I can’t check my Instagram, Facebook, snap, emails and blog.
If I’m not on my social media than you can most likely find me preparing for my latest blog post, shooting ootd/style looks, new product/flatlay posts, general lifestyle or if I’m lucky a travel post.
8. If you could give the women reading this one piece of advice, what would it be?
Keep trying as it’s the first step to succeeding. No matter how many times you get put down, tears streaming down your face, or you’re clueless about what you’re even doing in life anymore, just keep at it.
Do the things that make you happy, the things you’re most passionate about and be 100% you while doing them. Be in it for the long haul because trust me that’s my current situation right now. Hang tight, you’re on one hell of a journey!
9. Head to our online store and tell me what your favourite item is at the moment and why!
The tash dress that is up for presale at the moment. I can’t wait to get my hands on one when they are dispatched! This beauty looks so comfy, yet stylish with it’s cute floral print and bell sleeves.
This dress will be my go-to for festivals and just me letting my inner hippie flourish. It comes with a belt as well to help give shape to the overall look which is great for someone like myself who normally looks like a sack in anything that drapes too heavily. Seriously cannot wait to do a cute photo shoot for autumn in this baby!
10. Why do you love being a part of Blush Babes?
I appreciate that Elana from @blushclothingplayhouse reached out to me to become a part of the “blush babes” community because now I feel like I’m a part of something real. I get to take part in discussions with other like-minded ladies who are so supportive and absolutely beautiful inside and out. You all mean so much to me and yet I’ve never actually met any of you in person. We have such a beautiful connection and I’m so happy I get to share this wonderful journey with you all.
Thank you Elana and Karen for the wonderful clothes and online boutique and I look forward to being part of its continual success!
